The preschool in Mārupe municipality named “Zīļuks"

The “Zīļuks” preschool opened its doors to children on October 1, 2021. The architectural concept of the kindergarten building is based on the theme of Margarita Stāraste’s fairy tale Zīļuks (Little acorn). A special highlight is the green classroom in the inner courtyard, surrounded on all sides by glass walls..
The kindergarten features 18 tastefully and thoughtfully designed group rooms, as well as spacious areas for shared activities – a multifunctional hall for social events, a dining hall, rooms for sports and music lessons, and administrative offices.
“Zīļuks” is the largest municipal facility and one of the most energy-efficient new public buildings in the municipality, with a unique outdoor and indoor landscaping plan and modern, creative solutions.
Project solutions and challenges:
The kindergarten “Zīļuks” stands out for its particular attention to child safety. All doors accessible to children are equipped with ATHMER NR-32 UNISAFE finger protection solutions, which prevent fingers from being caught in the gap between the door leaf and the frame on the hinge side — the area with the highest risk of serious injury. The installed mechanisms effectively block access to this hazard zone.
All doors also feature handles with rounded edges (U-shaped), minimizing the risk of injury if children bump into them. At kindergarten age, a child’s height typically aligns with the height of the door handle, and sharp edges on handles can easily cause unpleasant injuries.
SB UN PARTNERI also supplied and installed a Masterkey locking system for this facility.
