The former Ventspils resident, doctor, and well-known patron Rauls Vēliņš has restored one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Ventspils, located at Kuldīgas Street 63, also known as Grīnbergs House. After reconstruction, the previously semi-ruined building has become an architectural masterpiece. On the building’s rear façade, the historic white plaster is clearly visible, harmoniously blending with the newly added extension made of burgundy-brown bricks.  Grīnbergs House has witnessed various periods and attitudes over time. It once housed the family of the Danish consul Mihael Langberg, and later, the first Archbishop of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Teodors Grīnbergs. In the 1990s, the building was partially demolished and remained vacant for more than 20 years.

The historic building now contains five high-comfort apartments, while the basement is planned to host a publicly accessible SPA and café. The beautifully restored building was also shortlisted for the Latvian Association of Architects’ 2024 Annual Award.

Project Solutions and Challenges:

The interior solutions used in the project, including door fittings, were carefully selected to fully align with the interior vision, which is primarily based on the memories of Mihael Langberg’s daughter, the original owner, and follows the National Romantic style. Great attention was paid to details – handles, locks, and strike plates all feature a unified matte brass design.

Particularly sophisticated is the entrance door hardware – combining modern technical solutions (solenoid locks, concealed door closers) with historically styled visible elements such as handles and hinges. These were manufactured according to SB UN PARTNERI’s technical design by the now-defunct German company Hoffschulte, which specialized in historic brass and ironwork. This approach achieved both modern functionality and an authentic design consistent with the building’s original construction era.
