In the summer of 2024, the Valmiera Theatre reconstruction project was completed. During the reconstruction, the administrative building designed by the outstanding architect Modris Ģelzis was preserved, and a new volume (3rd floor) was constructed, integrating a new theatre hall above the existing vestibule. This transformation significantly increases the capacity of the administrative part of the building, creating a unified and aesthetically pleasing overall appearance that blends organically into the urban environment from all viewing perspectives.
The renovated spaces offer broader opportunities for both artists and audiences, and they are fully adapted to modern requirements and easily accessible to people with mobility impairments. Additionally, the theatre gained a Black Box type hall, which will allow for a wider variety of theatrical art events.
Project technical specification:
Valmiera Theatre is one of the largest projects by SB UN PARTNERI SIA in recent years. We equipped all the aluminium, wooden, and metal doors of the Valmiera Theatre building with high-quality, load-resistant solutions in stainless steel and silver-tone finishes.
The biggest challenge of the project was to meet the client’s requirement for fast and quiet door operation around the perimeter near the audience seating areas, which, according to building regulations, must be equipped with specific panic or fire safety fittings. As part of this task, Free-Swing closers were used for the first time on double-leaf doors with a coordinator requirement.
Solutions used:
The Free-swing door closers are connected to a 24V power supply via the UATS alarm system and do not perform self-closing during daily use — the doors can be opened and closed without resistance, allowing actors to quickly and unobtrusively enter or exit the audience area.
Additionally, these junctions use BMH PTVA double-leaf panic door locking systems, which allow the active leaf to be operated without increased mechanical noise that would occur, for example, with automatic latch solutions.
Free-Swing door closers are also used on fire doors to WC cabins that have accessibility requirements. Fire safety regulations require the use of closers that can be an insurmountable obstacle for wheelchair users. The use of Free-Swing closers resolves this contradiction by allowing wheelchair users to independently and comfortably use the doors.
For fire doors separating the stairwell from the floor corridor—where free and unobstructed movement of large crowds must be ensured—GEZE TS-5000 ISM closers are used. These closers have an integrated UATS-controlled 24V hold-open function to keep the doors fixed in the open position.
At the central entrance doors, Wilka 4667 series panic lock systems with latch blocking functions have been installed. These allow the doors to be freely opened during theatre operations without pressing the handle, enabling the use of representative fixed large handles Diamantek ELEGANCE OAK PK4K on the building facade.
