Creating a functional sliding shutter for patio doors

Not every great project starts with architectural plans or a major construction site. Some of the best ideas come from everyday challenges around the home, where the goal is to find solutions that are practical, visually appealing, and cost-effective.

In this article, we'd like to share one such project. Our customer was looking for a stylish and practical way to cover the patio doors of a country house, with the primary goal of improving security while the property was unoccupied. At the same time, it was important to preserve the home's authentic character and add a distinctive country-style feature that would complement the façade.

When budget matters as much as the end result

When choosing a way to cover patio doors, it's important to strike the right balance between functionality, aesthetics, and budget. While the market offers a wide range of purpose-built outdoor sliding shutter systems, these solutions are often relatively expensive and may require more complex installation.

For this project, the customer was looking for a cost-effective alternative that would provide the required level of security, be easy to install, and complement the character of the country house.

After discussing the available options, we chose the SPOKE WHEEL sliding hardware system. Its distinctive Vintage-inspired design, finished in contemporary matte black and featuring decorative spoked rollers, adds authentic character to the façade. At the same time, its robust construction made it possible to create a reliable and durable sliding shutter for the patio doors without complicated installation or a significant investment.

Making a standard system work for a custom project

The SPOKE WHEEL sliding hardware system comes with a standard 2,000 mm track. For this project, however, a 4,000 mm track was required, as the sliding shutter itself was 2 metres wide and needed enough clearance to open fully.

After reviewing the project's requirements, our specialists recommended extending the standard track using additional extension sections. This made it possible to adapt the standard sliding hardware system to the specific needs of the project, achieving the required 4,000 mm track length without resorting to a custom-made solution. 

The result was a solution tailored to the project's exact requirements, without the added cost of a bespoke sliding system.

A perfect match for a country home

The sliding shutter itself was built from rough-sawn timber boards, preserving the wood's natural grain and rustic character. The textured finish blends seamlessly with the architecture of the country house, giving the façade a distinctive look while highlighting the beauty of natural materials.

Although SPOKE WHEEL is designed as an indoor sliding hardware system, the covered patio created the ideal conditions for using it on the exterior of the house. The deep roof overhang protects the hardware from direct exposure to rain and other weather conditions, making it a practical and reliable solution for the patio doors.
